![]() ![]() Students heading into her class might not have expected to spend an hour investigating the literary techniques a 1938 radio play about aliens. It’s a profound question to end on-one that characterizes the entire course. “In this mass democracy … what happens when you have these fake stories?” she asks. Once they’ve analyzed it through, Ards has a concluding question. Was it satire? A hoax? What would the difference be? They analyze the way the story is told, from the subtle nuances of characterization and dialogue, to the gradual pacing that shepherded the listener from a broadcast of Latin music through to a potentially dangerous astronomical phenomenon and finally to the impending doom of an alien invasion. The class discusses the implication of this event. Despite Welles’ disclaimer that the broadcast was nothing more than “Mercury Theatre’s own radio version of dressing up in a sheet and jumping out of a bush and saying Boo!” people thought they were listening to a real news broadcast and that the aliens had finally arrived to overthrow and annihilate humanity.Ī day after the program aired, the New York Daily News ’ headline read “Fake Radio ‘War’ Stirs Terror Through U.S.” Seventy-nine years ago, this radio broadcast announcing a hostile alien invasion sparked panic across parts of the United States. On this morning, Ards plays the original recording of Orson Welles’ 1938 War of the Worlds broadcast at the beginning of her class. So begins one of the greatest works of fake news ever written. The spectroscope indicates the gas to be hydrogen and moving towards the earth with enormous velocity … We now return you to the music of Ramón Raquello.” At 20 minutes before eight, central time, Professor Farrell of the Mount Jennings Observatory, Chicago, Illinois, reports observing several explosions of incandescent gas, occurring at regular intervals on the planet Mars. “Ladies and gentlemen, we interrupt our program of dance music to bring you a special bulletin from the Intercontinental Radio News. After only a few seconds of grooving to the beat, the broadcaster cuts in to announce some potentially alarming news: “With infinite complacence people went to and fro over the earth about their little affairs, serene in the assurance of their dominion over this small spinning fragment of solar driftwood which by chance or design man has inherited out of the dark mystery of Time and Space.”Ī radio broadcaster cuts in seconds later to introduce some upbeat Latin music courtesy of Ramón Raquello and his orchestra. Her byline has since appeared in Time, The Nation, and The Los Angeles Book Review, and she has published two books of her own. She went on to work at The Village Voice as a deputy copy chief, contributor, and senior editor. But her first feature was far from her last. When she wrote it, she was only starting out as a journalist two years out of UCLA with a masters in Afro-American studies. This literary opening anticipated where Ards’ career would eventually take her. She was a famed activist and writer and the fourth African-American woman ever to earn a doctoral degree. Opening with a Cooper quote is a lofty bar. “It begins with a quotation from Anna Julia Cooper, who was a 19th-century black feminist writer and educator.” “It was an effort to bring the awareness of violence against women and domestic violence to the community,” she said. On a personal level, it was the first time a major publication had trusted her to write a full feature. The famed boxer Mike Tyson had just been released from prison after a three-year sentence for rape, and Ards’ piece was a reflection and examination of the homecoming. The story was published in The Village Voice on July 25, 1995. “My favorite story is this story,” Ards said, pointing over her shoulder. In the sparsely-decorated space which she just moved into, the bold headline-“Sisters Act”-stands out. A framed page of newsprint, organized in columns around black and white photos of women marching, hangs behind Angela Ards’ desk. ![]() ![]() When inspiration strikes, the integrated USB port means that you can lay down tracks effortlessly with your bundled copy of the renowned Cubase AI DAW software. It would be easy for new users to be intimidated by the sheer number of tools and panels, though DxO has made improvements here. We have ours set up with a histogram and navigator panel in the left sidebar and adjustment tools in the right sidebar. The Customise (editing) window is more complicated. PhotoLab’s PhotoLibrary window is pretty straightforward, with a folder tree and search field in the left sidebar, histogram and metadata panels on the right and thumbnails in the middle – the interface is actually highly customisable. Speaking of ‘virtual’, you can create as many virtual copies of an image as you like without duplicating the image file itself on your computer. First, it has an improved PhotoLibrary panel where you can browse your images by folders, carry out basic searches based on image parameters and even create virtual Projects (or albums). So let’s take a look at what DxO PhotoLab 5 can do from a workflow perspective. The DxO PhotoLibrary is a basic but effective image organizer, now with EXIF, IPTC metadata support and keywords. Both versions will correct lens distortion, chromatic aberration, corner shading and even edge softness automatically, but to get the perspective correction tools we now take for granted in other software for fixing converging verticals, for example, you need to get the DxO ViewPoint add-on, which is more again. What PhotoLab does not have built in is perspective correction tools, even in the Elite edition. 1 month plan - $0 per month ($0 total cost) (opens in new tab).Quite apart from anything else, it comes with DxO’s very effective ClearView contrast enhancement and its uncannily effective DeepPRIME noise reduction – which could completely change your mind about ‘acceptable’ ISO settings on your camera. You can specify an alternate cache with the -cache command-line switch. By default, the cache is created in a directory on the system drive (normally C:\Cache). Using pc-client-local-cache.exe is recommended on large networks. ![]() The cache is self-managing and kept up-to-date ensuring that any new versions of the client are automatically and transparently copied down to the client. The local-cache version has the advantage that any future start ups use the local copy, which minimizes network traffic. The “local-cache” version ( pc-client-local-cache.exe), is a smarter version that first copies itself and associated files to the local drive and launches itself from there. Pc-client.exe launches the client directly off the network share. Two executables provide this launch functionality: You can run the client directly from the PCClient share setup on the server. This avoids the need for a separate installation process on each workstation and ensures the client software is automatically updated in conjunction with server updates. This involves configuring the workstations via group policy or otherwise, to run the client executable directly off the PCClient share - a share set up during installation. Do you recommended it or regret buying it?.While it's not cripplingly slow, when I use it in my workflows I make sure to only upscale parts of the footage that I know will end up in the edit. Does it fit into your workflow or does it only work if you have way more time so you can convert all clips before actually editing?.Multiple GPU configurations are supported, you could build a system with many GPUs and get extremely fast performance if you want a dedicated system to handle it - that's what the CGI studios I mentioned do, they have a servers with a half dozen RTX cards in. On my older GTX1070 it was way slower, about 6fps. For the tasks I do on a single RTX3080, I get almost real-time upscaling performance, about 20fps. Hugely dependent on your GPU configuration and performance. How fast is it to convert a lot of clips?.It's faster for them to export at 1080p and upscale to UHD than export natively at UHD with very little noticeable difference in resulting quality. I know a couple of CGI/3D studios that use it extensively, pretty much exactly as you're describing.
